Resident Counselors help individuals with daily living skills like personal care, cooking and community outings. As a Resident Counselor you will get to become an important part of the individual’s lives, also you will gain patience and sharpen your problem solving skills.

As a full time employee you will have access to health benefits, vacation time and other benefits.

Must be able to work rotating 2nd shift/overnight and every other weekend schedule. Will be required to have the ability to lift 50 lbs. HS Diploma or GED required. Must have valid driver’s license, insurance and reliable transportation.

Typical 2 week rotating schedule:

Week 1

Monday 4:00p.m. – 8:30a.m.
Tuesday 4:00p.m. – 8:30a.m.
Wednesday OFF
Thursday OFF
Friday 4:00p.m. THROUGH Monday 8:30a.m.

Title: Resident Counselor

Responsible to: Residential Casemanager

 

Objective: To provide supervision, instruction and guidance as needed to CRS participants in Group Homes or home/apartment settings, to provide for household management and to complete required documentation of services.

Duties:

 

  • Serves in the role of Counselor or Resident Counselor to participants.

  • Provides supportive encouragement to individual on a personal basis either in a one-on-one or small group situation and gives instructions, advice and assistance on personal problems.

  • Ensures that meals are planned, prepared, and served within the home with maximum participant involvement.

  • Responsible for keeping house/apartments clean and inspection ready at Group Homes and completing work on the grounds as needed as all houses.

  • Assists individuals in all aspects of maintaining their homes/apartments in a clean and sanitary manner.

  • Responsible for monitoring medication ordering, taking, and completing required documentation.

  • Responsible for creating environment conducive to group interaction and personal development.

  • Serves as a situational counselor in assignment dealing with individuals with intellectual disabilities. As assigned provides supportive services to participants in matters regarding orientation to the community

  • Helps individuals cultivate appropriate social, behavioral, personal care, and interpersonal skills and attitudes useful in everyday community living and adjustment.

  • Assists participants to plan and carry out recreational activities and participates or given instruction and assistance as needed; supervises group trips and social functions; assists individuals on shopping trips.

  • Implements individual plans, including necessary, accurate documentation. (i.e. daily documentation, monthly financial reports, and money envelopes.).

  • Responsible for assisting participants in budgeting and other types of money management and completing all required documentation in regards to monetary transactions.

  • Responsible for safe transportation with personal vehicles and/or agency vehicles.

  • Confers with Casemanagers and other staff regarding special problems; participants in group interaction and other group sessions as a member of the treatment team.

  • Supports individuals in taking and ordering medications including monitoring and completing documentation as required by individuals and specific programs.

  • Provides for security and safety within area of responsibility.

  • Serves in a managerial role as the “staff person in charge” when assigned as the primary staff on duty in a group home. Responsible for the health, welfare and safety of participants.

  • Notifies supervisor immediately when initial, specific training is needed prior to working an assignment.

  • Reports contacts with outside agencies/individuals immediately to supervisor.

  • Attends training as assigned.

  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality to ensure participant needs are met. Regular and on site attendance required.

  • Responsible for working weekends and holidays.

  • Follows HIPAA and confidentiality policies.

    Qualifications:

     

    Knowledge and Abilities:

     

    Knowledge of the organization, functions, policies, rules and philosophy of community residential services and the Handicapped Development Center

    Ability to secure the confidence, respect and cooperation of the participants and families and exercise tact, initiative and good judgment in dealing with them

    Ability to anticipate problems and to cope quickly and decisively with unexpected situations and behavior

    Must have ability to hear participant day or night and/or from separate rooms

    Good perception and mental alertness

    Ability to keep timely and accurate documentation of services and expenditures

    Ability to lift from floor/carry/transfer individuals and adaptive equipment in excess of 50 pounds

    Ability to carry/escort individuals in excess of 50 pounds and utilize positive behavioral support techniques during behavior problems

    Ability to report accurately on conditions

    Possesses a current and valid driver’s license and maintains a good driving record. Must not be denied coverage by the Handicapped Development Center’s insurance carrier

    Ability to successfully complete medication manager class

    Possesses valid car insurance

    Ability to use basic computer programs (Microsoft office suite) to complete electronic documentation and perform basic functions related to computer use. (i.e. keyboarding, email, data entry)

Ability to use computer to navigate and enter information into web-based software

Ability to understand and follow the policies and procedures of HDC

 

Training and Experience:

 

Graduate from high school or GED
